My name is Deirdre Bailey. I am an educator, a researcher, a leader and an adventurer passionate about thoughtful, responsive and ecologically conscious pedagogy.  My teaching philosophy reflects a commitment to designing learning experiences in which students have the opportunity to engage intellectually and emotionally with authentic questions that invite in-depth exploration of a topic and its place in the world.  I believe in active exploration, collaboration, communication, creativity and play as part of learning, along with ongoing feedback and reflection in order to encourage students to deepen, articulate, and refine their understanding. My vision for 21st century leadership involves building capacity for extending teaching and learning beyond the school community through reconciliation, relationship-building, dialogue and consideration of multiple perspectives. Research interests include hermeneutic phenomenology, critical and social justice pedagogy, mathematics education, eco-pedagogy and place-based pedagogy. Personal passions include long walks in the wilderness with my husband and two young children, running, skiing, Celtic music, poetry, morning coffee, horses, fresh rainfall and the wild north coast of Ireland.

In the spirit of reconciliation, I acknowledge that I live, work and play on the traditional territories and of the Blackfoot Confederacy (Siksika, Kainai, Piikani), the Tsuut’ina, the Iyarhe Nakoda Nations, the Métis Nation (Region 3), and all people who make their homes in the Treaty 7 region of Southern Alberta.
